Important Information for Incoming Students

SMSU Student-Owned Computer Support Procedures

The Technology Resource Center student staff will work with students to upgrade/fix their own computers. The student staff will perform initial analysis of the computer. The student Technicians are not authorized to open computers. For hardware repairs, students will be referred to local computers stores.

How Helpdesk/Technician staff will work with students:

Rather than having students drop off their machines to be worked on, troubleshooting guidelines/initial hands-on guidance will be provided. If the guidelines do not solve the problem, an appointment will be made either by calling or e-mailing the TRC Helpdesk. Appointment times will be restricted to 2:30-4:30. Students will then bring in their computer, and work on it with the Helpdesk/Technician staff. In the case of more serious problems requiring virus removal, the computer will be checked in and the Technician staff will perform the work.

The Helpdesk/Technician staff can support:

• Service computers for preventive and corrective maintenance.
• Diagnose hardware problems.
• Show students how to configure their PC for automatic updates.
• Assist in installing Clean Access for student computers in residential halls.
• Help connect laptops to the wireless network.
• Help students load personally purchased or open sourced software on their PC.

The Helpdesk/Technician staff will not support the following due to liability:

• Hardware repairs                                           Notice: We no longer provide dial-up connection through SMSU.
• Personal printers
• Machines under warranty.
• Devices with liquids spilled on them.
• Personal computers from faculty and staff members.
