At SMSU, we know how important it is for you to help your child find the perfect school. SMSU offers the following advantages:
Our Crime Statistics are consistently low, and University Public Safety is dedicated to keeping all members of SMSU safe.
SMSU sits on a 216-acre campus just blocks away from Downtown Marshall (population 13,000). Downtown also boasts cozy cafés and shops. SMSU offers many comfortable spots for your student to relax and socialize, as well as resources to help them stay focused on their studies.
SMSU offers many unique financial advantages, such as our banded tuition. Approximately 80% of all students receive an average of $8,700 in financial in various forms. Also, SMSU does not have out-of-state tuition charges!
All classes at SMSU are taught by certified faculty--never by teaching assistants. And with a student-faculty ratio of 18:1, you can be assured that your child will receive the attention they need to succeed while at SMSU.
Staff members at the Academic Commons area offer resources for improving time management, note-taking, and study skills. The SMSU Writing Center provides assistance with assignments. Academic and Diversity Resources staff helps students improve reading, reasoning, and study skills.
Southwest’s athletic teams are ranked nationally, across the board. They win conference championships, advance to NCAA tournaments, and even win The Big One! (NCAA Conference Championships include Women’s Volleyball, ’07; Men’s Basketball, ’08; and Women’s Volleyball, ’08.)
SMSU coaches are extremely proud of the high grade point averages of their athletes. And it’s typical for athletes to be found reading to local elementary kids or raking leaves for community work-a-thons. That’s why our athletic department was recognized two years in a row by the NCAA as the top civic engagement program in the conference.
SMSU also offers many opportunities for your student to participate in unique Intramural sports--Frisbee Golf, Raquetball, Sand Volleyball, and Whiffleball, just to name a few!
