Special Olympics Minnesota
"Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
Special Olympics was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver with the belief that individuals with intellectual disabilities could participate in their communities and in life. It is the largest, fastest-growing sports program in the world, representing 2 million intellectually disabled athletes in more than 150 countries.
Special Olympics Minnesota began in 1973. Currently, more than 6000 Minnesotans with intellectual disabilities participate and compete in 18 Olympic-type sports ranging from alpine skiing to aquatics to volleyball. Atheletes are eligible for training at age six and for competition on the day of their eighth birthday. There is no upper age limit for participation. Special Olympics Minnesota divides the state into 12 competition areas with more than 190 active delegations.
